Let the Journey Begin

The Plan

Or as I like to call it, What on earth happened?

In February 2005 my wife and I moved to what we thought would be our retirement community. I was 55 years old with what I figured would be another 10 years of work ahead of me. We thought it was going to be really good move. We bought a townhouse on a barrier island with a short 300′ walk to the beach.

Everything was progressing according to plan until a few hundred greedy bankers decided to trash our economy and destroy the lives of millions of people. We went upside down on not one, but two houses, and then things got worse.

In July, 2009, I underwent surgery to repair and abdominal aortic aneurism and was out of work recuperating for 6 weeks. After returning to work for a few weeks my plan was altered in a new way and I started on a new journey.

My new journey was not started voluntarily. It was the result of being laid off as the Director of Business Operations for a local non-profit in October, 2009. So here I was 60 years old and unemployed during the worst recession in my lifetime.   We were nowhere near ready for, or wealthy enough to retire. What do I do?  What are my chances for getting another job? Do I really want another job? What can I do to earn a living? How am I ever going to retire?

My situation was one whereby I couldn’t retire or look forward to retiring unless I found a way to earn a living in retirement.

I’d heard about people earning a living on the internet.  So while I started looking for a job, I also started researching the income possibilities of working on the internet, and the journey was underway.

Update May, 2012:   That was my first post back in May, 2010. It’s now 2 years later and a lot has happened since then.

So welcome to my journey.

My new goal is to Retire and Survive.

This way to the next CHAPTER
